HOW CHURCHES CAN HELP
1. Embrace This Mission.
Pray for its acceptance by those who may need the service, for its acceptance by our entire community as part of God’s work and our unconditional responsibility to our brothers and sisters.
2. Give Time. Help Staff the Shelter.
Location: First Presbyterian of Mount Airy.
Be part of a 3-5-person (minimum, including 1 male & 1 female) overnight team and help to cover an 8-week* period (Jan-Feb). You will help staff the shelter and provide a safe, warm place for people to sleep who often do not have that luxury. 5:30 PM – 7:00 AM
This is the most important volunteer gift for the entire project. Without this collaborative gift of time, the project cannot happen.
>A sign up calendar will be provided. Consider signing up as a Sunday School Class, splitting the evening into shifts and choosing a few nights during the 8-week period.
3. Feed the Hungry.
People need warmth and safety, but also nourishment to get a good night’s sleep.
The goal is to provide a simple evening meal (i.e. beans/rice or cornbread) and a
served or “to-go” breakfast (i.e. coffee, juice, biscuit w/meat or hard-boiled egg w/crackers)
4. Transport.
If your church has a vehicle, it is possible it could be needed to transport guests from the meeting place to the shelter site in the evening and the back again in the morning.
5. Help Monetarily.
Many materials and supplies will be needed, those can be purchased via donations
-Or collaborate with organizers to provide specific items needed to set up the basics to open the shelter by January 1.
- provide additional items as their purpose becomes evident as the project evolves;
- help with maintenance chores, such as laundry of daily bed coverings to prep for the following evening’s guests
Makes checks out to: First Presbyterian Church; memo line: Room In the Inn. A tax-deductible receipt will be sent.
